Description
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj (1630-1680) was the founder of the Maratha Empire in western India. Born in the Bhonsle family, he rose to power by uniting the Maratha people against the Mughal Empire, Adil Shahi, and Portuguese forces. Shivaji established a competent and progressive administration and buil a strong navy, making the Marathas a dominant force. He was crowned Chhatrapati (emperor) in 1674 at Raigad Fort. His empire was based on Hindavi Swarajya (self-rule of the Hindus) and focused on justice, religious tolerance, and welfare of the people. After his death in 1680, his legacy was carried forward by his successors and Peshwas, expanding the Maratha Empire across much of India.
